The thing with including Final Fantasy characters in any comic is that you're always fighting against the characterization popularized by 8-Bit Theater. Black Mage is evil, has always been evil, and will always be evil. There's no rhyme or reason to it after a while -- it's just the way he is.
Writing Claude, I went out of my way to make him a different character (and not just because I named him instead of simply calling him "Black Mage"). I wanted him to feel fully realized and like a person, not just a single character type with magic abilities.
