If the niece is dead (that niece being Elizabeth Bartley, aka Erzsabet Bathory), as is Dracula's wife (Lisa), that would leave just Dracula and Alucard for the family reunions. That doesn't sound like much of a reunion:
"Oh, son it's good to see y-ow! You stabbed me. I'm dead!"
In that context, yeah, I'd question Dracula's use of resources, too.
bear in mind, I can't just have the heroes go after Dracula (or even remember he's there), since they don't bother getting around to that for a good portion of the first game. Gotta leave some plot threads hanging for later (earlier).

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...
These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...
They actually do something heroic.
