A number of sources state that if you kill a master vampire, all his underlings revert to human form. Heck, the Strain (both the book and the show) say that -- it's just part of the mythology.
It's a part that never sat right with me, though. Vampires are dead. No one debates that point. Someone has to die to become a vampire, otherwise they're just human servants. I can see the servants being freed, but once you're dead it seems like you shouldn't be able to come back from that.
