DSWC Heroes Introduction #10: Fantasy Setting
When the original Final Fantasy came out it was expected to be the swan song for a company (Square) that expected to go out of business -- the "final" part was expected to be true. And yet Final Fantasy became a breakaway hit, saving Square and becoming one of the biggest series of all time.

Of course, there's a certain irony to a series called "Final Fantasy" that also has sequels -- not exactly very final. This was spun, at one time, by Square saying each game took place on its own world, and that the game was the "final" fantasy for that world. As an excuse that held up pretty well until Square started producing sequels to each of the games, such as Final Fantasy X-2 (sequel to Final Fantasy X involving three characters from the first game tying up a loose plot thread) or Final Fantasy IV: the After Years (a sequel to Final Fantasy IV that takes place many years after the original game).

For DSWC, it is worth pointing out that the four characters above (the Fighter, Red Mage, Black Belt, Black Mage) appear regularly in the comic. They grow into a bit of team, appearing in several one-off comics.

Those unfamiliar with the Final Fantasy series should know what each of those character classes do. Fighters are, of course, fighters -- warriors more at home with weapons than magic. Black Belts are warriors, but unlike Fighters, they work best barehanded. Black Mages are the opposite of Fighters, masters of magic but sucky with weapons. Red Mages are in between the two, good with both magic and weapons but masters of neither.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
