All those drapies and torches and musty bricks... I'm leaning towards ambiance as well.
However, it is a damn good explanation. Magic sources being what they are, and the CV universe having clear divisions on their magical spheres (thanks to CotM), I would have to say it's a damn good guess that nicely fits the information provided.
