Well yeah, Final Fantasy is a turn based game. Eric and Claude would normally want to fight in turn (however the layout) because that's what they were trained to do.
The merman would be weak to lightning (well, BOLT or LIT). Aquatic enemies are weak to lightning in the Final Fantasy games. Just how it works.
Although, come to think of it, that's pretty much every game series. I seem to recall Bubbleman or Bubble Crab or one of them being super weak to lightning. Hrmm...
