#449: Self-Defeating
This occurred to me the last time I watched the trilogy. When we first meet up with Luke, he really wants to go to the academy. When he says it, all we know is that there is the Galactic Empire. As far as that character is concerned, it's Empire or nothing. The Rebellion isn't known to him.
And, really, why would it be? As the prequels indicate (yes, I'll use them for an argument if I have to), the Republic fell and became the Empire. It's the only form of government most people have. No one questions when Stormtroopers start parading around Tatooine trying to find a couple of droids. They are the law, and everyone accepts that.
So if Luke was gonna go to an academy, where else would he go? No where, that's right.
Also, if you extrapolate out a little further, Luke mentions "all my friends are going to the academy." This presumably means they're all going to become fighter pilots just like Luke does. They all make it in, too (probably).
Then Luke becomes a fighter pilot for the Rebellion, and goes around, in the last stretch of the movie, shooting Imperial pilots. Oh, I know they show Like encountering people he knows, but those schmoes could be anyone. Not all of them are his friends he mentioned earlier.
All I'm saying is that Luke is on the wrong side of the battle by the end of the first movie. And then he kills his friends. And, eventually, his father. Luke is a murderer.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...
These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...
They actually do something heroic.
